Back by popular demand for the third year is the Rudolph Family Fun 5k Run/Walk, and you can register now at all Kokomo-Howard County Public Library locations and online for your convenience through Eventbrite. You can also download the registration form, fill it out, and return it and with your check to ATTN: Lisa Fipps, KHCPL Main, 220 N. Union St., Kokomo, IN 46901.

“Each year we ask for feedback to make it bigger and better,” said Lisa Fipps, Director of Marketing and Community Engagement at KHCPL. “In 2015 we found out people wanted more fun things to do after picking up their registration packets and before the run starts. So we’ll have Reindeer Games, such as Tic-Tac-Doe, Pin the Nose on Rudolph, and Blitzen Volleyball, and prizes. We’ll also have a photo booth.”

Those in the running world are taking note of the inexpensive, family-focused, fun event. “We’ve developed a following, and are finding more and more runners coming to Kokomo from Peru, Tipton, Indianapolis, Goshen, Frankfort, Fort Wayne, Westfield, Lawrenceburg, Anderson, and Noblesville, to name a few,” Fipps said.

If you sign up by Nov. 18, you’ll save money with our “Early Reindeer” registration. It’s $20 per person or $50 for a family of three or more.

“For that $20 you can participate in the race and receive a long-sleeved T-shirt, deer antlers, a blinking Rudolph nose, water, snacks, and — if you’re one of the first 200 people to cross the finish line — a medal,” Fipps said. “That’s a pretty big bang for your buck — pun intended.”

“The custom medals are different each year,” Fipps said. “We’ve designed them to be collectible for the runners.”

Everyone receives a T-shirt, but to ensure you’ll have yours on the day of the run you need to register by Nov. 21. “If you register after that date, we’ll do everything we can to make sure you receive your T-shirt on Dec. 3, but you may have to pick it up after the race,” Fipps said.

The Friends of the Library and Expressions Design Co. sponsor the T-shirts, which come in a variety of sizes: youth (XS, S, M, L, and XL) and adult (S, M, L, XL, 2XL, 3XL, 4XL, and 5XL). There is an additional $2 fee for sizes 2XL-5XL.

From Nov. 19 until Dec. 3, the registration fee is $25 for an individual and $60 for a family of three or more. “We encourage people to register early and save money,” Fipps said.

Participants start and end at the Kokomo-Howard County Public Library, 220 N. Union St., and journey through Foster Park and over to UTC Park for the turn-around.

“The City of Kokomo Traffic Commission and Emergency Management Agency work well with us to keep everyone safe,” Fipps said. “We can’t thank them enough because safety is our No. 1 priority for the event. While we’ll do everything we can think of to keep everyone save, we do remind participants to pay attention to their surroundings and be on the lookout for drivers, especially for anyone who tries to disregard any traffic signs or directions.”

Trophies and door prizes will be awarded after a short presentation.

Trophies, sponsored by Salin Bank and Red Dot Trophy Shop, will be awarded to the top overall male and female finishers in the run and in the walk, and to the top male and female runners in each of the following age groups: 0-12; 13-19; 20-29; 30-39; 40-49; 50-59; and 60+. In addition, trophies will be awarded to the overall fastest walker in each of the following age groups: 0-18; 19-35; 36-54; and 55+.

You could win one of many door prizes, too, including a Garmin Forerunner. “Community Howard Regional Health has been a supportive partner from the very beginning and make the door prizes possible,” Fipps said.

It is a timed run, and Club Kokomo Roadrunners is partnering with KHCPL once again to keep runners’ and walkers’ times. Times will be posted on the week after the run. Photos will be posted on the library’s Facebook page.

Dogs on leashes that are well-controlled and up-to-date on their vaccines are welcome. Runners will lead the pack, followed by walkers, and then those with strollers and pets. No rain/weather date. No refunds.
