In December 1985 Andrew C Thornton II, a former narcotics officer turned drug dealer, jumped from his plane with 75 lbs. of cocaine somewhere over Georgia. Thornton died and the cocaine went missing. Three months later, 40 opened plastic containers of cocaine were found alongside a bear who passed away after consuming the cocaine. The bear was given the nickname “Cocaine Bear.”

While people do not know exactly how the bear reacted when it consumed the cocaine, the movie Cocaine Bear takes a stab at it. This horror-comedy, directed by Elizabeth Banks, deals a group of people who try to escape the bear’s rampage. Included in this group is a mother (Keri Russell) trying to rescue her children who have skipped school to go in the woods, drug dealers (headed by Ray Liotta) who are trying to find their lost cocaine, and a park ranger trying to control a gang of teenagers. The pacing of the movie is predictable but the humor makes this an interesting watch. The movie does have some gore so if you don’t like that this movie may not be for you. If you like to watch animals go wild, Cocaine Bear is for you.

Cocaine Bear is available to checkout on Blu-ray and DVD here at KHCPL.  If you like Cocaine Bear, we have other movies that are very similar. Check those out too.
